When Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) Should Be Avoided and is contraindicated

Absolute Contraindications (MLD must not be performed):

•  Any untreated metastatic or systemic malignant condition

•  Acute inflammation with infection

•  Untreated thrombosis (deep vein thrombosis) at risk of embolism

•  Cardiac insufficiency / Congestive heart failure

•  Kidney failure or severe renal insufficiency

Conditions Requiring Precautions and Treatment Modifications

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) may be performed with caution and appropriate modifications to the treatment technique, duration, or intensity.

•  Edema following carcinoma treatment

•  Hyperthyroidism

•  Chronic inflammation

•  Bronchial asthma

•  Low blood pressure (hypotension)
