Frequently Asked Questions
Benefits of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)
• Reduces swelling and discomfort – Effectively decreases post-surgical and injury-related swelling while relieving associated pain.
• Accelerates healing – Promotes faster recovery after surgeries, injuries, and trauma by supporting the body’s natural repair processes.
• Supports detoxification – Helps remove metabolic waste, toxins, bacteria, excess fluid, proteins, and other unwanted substances from the tissues.
• Promotes deep relaxation – Calms the sympathetic nervous system, reducing stress and leaving you feeling more relaxed and balanced.
What is the Lymphatic System?
The lymphatic system is a vital part of both your immune system and the body’s natural wound-healing process. It works quietly in the background to maintain fluid balance, defend against infection, and eliminate toxins through the lymph nodes.
Unlike the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system has no central pump (like the heart). Instead, lymph fluid moves through the body with the help of breathing, muscle contractions, and one-way valves. Because it relies on movement to function effectively, circulation can slow down after surgery, injury, or periods of reduced activity.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialized, gentle technique that stimulates and accelerates this natural lymph flow. It helps reduce swelling, supports detoxification, and promotes faster healing by encouraging the body’s own drainage system.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) can help improve the following conditions:
• Primary and secondary lymphedema
• Lipedema
• Fibromyalgia
• Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
• Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
• Rheumatoid Arthritis
• Post-surgical edema and swelling
• Pre- and post-cosmetic procedures (tummy tuck, liposuction, BBL, facelift, mommy makeover, etc.)
• Pre- and post-orthopedic procedures (knee replacement, hip replacement, etc.)
• Sprains, strains, and hematomas
• Migraines and sinus headaches
• Allergies
• Circulatory disturbances
• Post-breast cancer treatments
• General detoxification support
• Pregnancy Fluid Retention
What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, light, skin-stretching technique that stimulates the natural movement of lymph fluid. It helps reduce swelling in areas such as the arms, legs, abdomen (tummy), or face by encouraging the body’s own drainage system.
You have between 600 and 700 lymph nodes throughout your body, located just beneath the skin. Because of this, MLD uses very light, rhythmic pressure — no oils or lotions are applied. The touch is intentionally gentle: the deeper you press, the less effective it becomes at moving lymph fluid.
Unlike the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system has no central pump like the heart. Instead, lymph flow depends on movement, breathing, and muscle contractions. MLD essentially acts as a “manual pump,” helping the fluid circulate more efficiently.
Treatment typically begins in the unaffected areas first. This clears the pathways and “decongests” the system, allowing excess fluid, proteins, and waste to drain more effectively from the swollen or surgical area. As a result, MLD helps reduce swelling, supports faster healing, and improves overall lymph flow
Why Should You Get Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?
Any surgery — whether elective (such as a tummy tuck, liposuction, BBL, or facelift) or medically necessary (such as knee or hip replacement) — can disrupt the lymphatic system and cause inflammation. Swelling is a normal part of healing, but it doesn’t have to slow you down.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a gentle, highly effective treatment that helps your body eliminate excess fluid more quickly. This reduces painful swelling and discomfort, speeds up recovery, and provides noticeable relief.
MLD is also the gold-standard treatment for both primary and secondary lymphedema, helping to manage chronic swelling and prevent complications by keeping lymph fluid moving efficiently.
If excess fluid is not addressed, proteins can accumulate in the tissues, leading to hardening, lumpiness, or fibrosis. Regular MLD helps prevent these issues and supports smoother, healthier healing overall.
Important MLD Facts
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is not a massage. Many people refer to it as “lymphatic massage,” but it is a specialized drainage technique. If you ask your surgeon for approval for “lymphatic massage,” they will often say no — simply because the word “massage” is used. MLD is very different: it is gentle, rhythmic, and focused on moving lymph fluid, not muscle work.
Not all massage therapists are trained in MLD. It requires specific, advanced certification beyond standard massage training.
MLD is not painful. Most clients find it extremely gentle and relaxing.
MLD supports the body’s natural detoxification process by helping to move waste and excess fluid out of the tissues.
MLD can often begin very soon after surgery (in some cases with your surgeon’s approval). Starting early helps stimulate lymph flow, reduce swelling and inflammation, aid in preventing Fibrosis and promote faster healing.
