Let’s talk Compression Garments
Let’s talk about compression garments and why they’re such a game-changer for so many people dealing with swelling, inflammation, or lymphedema.
These garments — like sleeves, stockings, gloves, or wraps — are designed to apply gentle, graduated pressure. They’re snugger at your hands or feet and gradually get lighter as they move up toward your body. That clever design helps support your body’s natural fluid movement.
How they actually work
The gentle pressure from the garment increases the pressure inside your tissues, which does a few really helpful things:
• It reduces how much fluid leaks out of your tiny blood vessels into the surrounding tissues
• It boosts both lymphatic and venous return, helping fluid flow back where it belongs
• It encourages lymph fluid to move toward healthy drainage areas closer to your torso
• When you move, breathe, or exercise, the garment works together with your muscles to create a gentle “pumping” effect — something the lymphatic system doesn’t have on its own
In simple terms, they help prevent fluid from pooling while gently encouraging it to drain.
Why people love them for swelling and lymphedema
Many of my clients find compression garments incredibly effective at:
• Reducing and controlling swelling — They help move excess lymph fluid out of the affected area, which can noticeably decrease limb size
• Preventing fluid from coming right back — Once the swelling is down, wearing them consistently helps keep things stable over time
• Improving lymphatic circulation — The steady pressure gently stimulates the lymphatic vessels and supports your body’s drainage pathways
A lot of people also notice:
• Their limb feels lighter and less heavy
• Better movement and range of motion
• Greater ease with everyday activities like walking, working, or exercising
They’re especially great for long-term management and are a key part of Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), particularly after the more intensive treatment phases.
Benefits for inflammation
Because they improve fluid drainage and circulation, compression garments can help calm inflammation that’s fueled by fluid buildup. Many users tell me they feel less aching, tightness, and discomfort once the swelling starts to settle.
Other wonderful benefits
• Pain relief and better comfort — Less excess fluid means less pressure on nerves and tissues
• Healthier skin and tissue — Over time, consistent use can help soften hardened (fibrotic) areas and protect your skin
• Prevention — For people at higher risk (for example, after cancer treatment that involved lymph node removal), starting compression early can lower the chance of developing or worsening lymphedema
• Improved quality of life — Less swelling and heaviness often means better sleep, more confidence, and the ability to stay active in the things you love
A few important things to know
For the best results, it’s really important to get properly fitted by a trained specialist. The right level of compression (measured in mmHg) makes all the difference. Too loose won’t help, and too tight can cause issues, so getting that fit just right is key.
These garments work best when they’re part of a bigger plan that includes Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD), exercise, skin care, and elevation.
While most people tolerate them well, they’re not suitable for everyone. Conditions like severe peripheral arterial disease, untreated severe heart failure, or active infections are common reasons we might recommend against them. That’s why it’s always smart to check with your doctor or a lymphedema specialist before getting started.
